Abstract

The article aims to establish the degree of implementation in Belarusian phonetic studies of universal methodological principles on which the study of consonantal distribution (consonant combinability) is based. The article substantiates the inadvisability of using syllables and morphemes as a phonological unit for studying consonantal distribution. It is shown that a phonetic word - a sound sequence limited on both sides by a pause (this includes both compounds and combinations of basic parts of speech with proclitics and enclitics) - must be a such unit. It is concluded that the phonetic structure of complex and abbreviated words significantly extends the traditional consonant combinability rules. It is noted that when studying combinatorial properties of consonants, it is necessary to determine which of them in general can be combined in a given position (and in what sequence), and which combinations are prohibited. The main limitations in the consonantal distribution of the Belarusian literary language, formulated in previous linguistic studies, are presented. It is shown that foreign vocabulary is predominantly adapted in such a way that its sound capsule corresponds to the traditional rules of phoneme combinability, however, this process may be accompanied by the emergence of new combinations. It is concluded that the inventory of possible consonant groups, as well as combinatorial restrictions require clarification related to taking into account the use of composites and foreign words in the language.
