Abstract

This article is devoted to the comparative analysis of human and machine translation of international vocabulary in German and Belarusian journalistic texts. The object of the study is internationalisms selected from Belarusian and German media texts in various fields. The purpose of the study is to identify the peculiarities of the translation of international vocabulary in journalistic texts. The source of practical material were articles of German-language online magazines zeit.de, welt.de, spiegel.de and Belarusian news agencies blr.belta.by, bel.sputnik.by, zviazda.by. The material of the analysis consists of 224 German and 285 Belarusian words selected from 24 German and 24 Belarusian publicistic texts. The article includes statistics of translations of international words made by human translators and online translators. The study describes in detail the results of translating the chosen texts using two machine translators – Google and Yandex. Specific examples of translations of words and sentences are reviewed, and the cases in which translation difficulties arise are analysed. The question of how the method and specificity of translating internationalisms changes depending on the degree of kinship between the source and target languages is discussed. The article proposes a translation algorithm that helps to avoid mistakes during translation of internationalisms in German and Belarusian texts: component analysis (detailed study of the semantic structure and meaning of the international word), contextual analysis (study of the context in which the word is used), consideration of examples of using this internationalism in other contexts, comparing the meaning of the internationalism studied in German and the Russian word, analysing possible translation variants of internationalisms, translation of international vocabulary in context.
