Abstract

The article considers the conditions of constructing sociocultural reality by the mass media. A theoretical review has been presented, covering English-language and Russian sources on the studied issue. A categorization of sociocultural models of journalism is presented. It is considered the functions performed by the media and taking into consideration the sociocultural and political contexts. The research based on a qualitative-quantitative content analysis of scientific and educational literature regarding. Additionally, surveys were conducted among journalists from the news agency “Mogilevskiye vedomosti” and the newspaper “Vestnik Mogileva”. Content analysis was performed on regional media as well as the main national newspaper “SB. Belarus’ segodnya”. During the research, the current functions of Belarusian journalism were identified, and the percentage of their implementation in both national and regional mass media was revealed. The main conclusion of the study is that contemporary sociocultural models of Belarusian journalism are formed based on the functions performed by the media: informational, political, socializing, vox populi, recreational, educational, and culture-forming. These functions cover a broad range of tasks entrusted to state mass media, which are defined by regulatory acts and the state agenda.
