Abstract

The article is devoted to the linguistic analysis of the semantics of tactile perception adjectives, namely, the identification of spheres (target areas) of metaphorical transfer – one of the most productive ways of semantic word formation and means of new knowledge conceptualization as a result of the transformation of the original meaning. The article reveals the connection between the semantics of adjectives, which express a tactile feature, and cognitive processes of perception and postulates the thesis that the new meanings emergence in the language is not accidental, but follows regular models and testifies to the modeled nature of semantic processes. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the analysis of the semantic structure of tactile adjectives in Russian, Belarusian, English and German and the identification of the most typical target areas of metaphorical transfer in the formation of secondary meanings. The introduction presents the methodology of the study, the main part – specific models of metaphorical semantic derivation providing for the transfer from the source domain ‘tactile property’ to the target domains ‘properties perceived by other senses’, ‘intensity of properties, phenomena, situations’, ‘human character and emotional states’, ‘evaluation’, ‘difficulty/ease of exposure’, ‘incompleteness’. A table with quantitative data on the languages in question is given to substantiate the non/regularity of a particular model of semantic derivation. The conclusion is made that metaphorical transfer becomes possible on the basis of ‘intensity’ and ‘evaluation’ semantics in the derivative semantics of the analyzed lexemes. However, different “possibilities” of gradation and evaluation of the feature expressed by adjectives of certain lexical-semantic groups are reflected in the productivity of certain transfer models.
