Abstract

The article analyzes the importance of such an indicator as light resistance for paint coatings in various fields of human activity: printing, security printing, painting and drawing.

It is noted that the choice of colors of paints, the creation of a paint layer, the requirements for its uniformity are fundamentally different for the fields of printing and painting. They are almost the opposite. In the industry, the principle of a minimum and sufficient number of paint colors to achieve the required level of quality applies. In painting, there is no limit on the number of colors used. The use of many pigments of different nature in paints complicates the regulation of their properties. Previous work has shown that light significantly changes the color characteristics of colored coatings. In this paper, we studied the light fastness of semi-professional quality watercolors and gouache paints. Color swatches were aged for a year in conditions with different levels of lighting and temperature conditions. Next, a visual inspection of the color changes of the paints was performed and the graphic dependences of the lightness of the paint on the time of exposure to light and low temperature were analyzed.

It was determined that the color change of the studied paints is affected by direct exposure to sunlight. Light causes the color to disappear completely in watercolors with light fastness levels 1 and 2. Gouache is more resistant to light and practically does not fade.
