Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of superlinear diacritical marks of Belarusian writing. A small excursion into the history of the appearance and use of acute and varia in Belarusian manuscripts and printed monuments of the 15th–19th centuries is offered, the reasons for the rejection of accent marks from the 18th century are outlined and the grounds according to which J. Kupala undertook to use the “optimal” variant of writing in the play “Paulinka”. Groups of tokens used by the author without an accent, individual nouns with two accent marks are established. The effect of stress on the spelling and pronunciation of the particle ne and the preposition without, Kupala’s accentological variants, the designation of stressed syllables in complex words written together and with a hyphen are considered. A number of words were identified where stress acts as a phonological device, which performs a meaning-differentiating (significant) function.
