Abstract

The article is devoted to the state policy in the Russian Empire of the 19th century, aimed at reducing the number of representatives of the nobility in the western provinces. After the partition of the Commonwealth, a large number of gentry joined the ranks of the subjects of the Russian crown. However, the traditions of political anarchy and economic decline made it dangerous in socio-political terms. The events of the first half of the 19th century showed that this group of the population of Belarus does not fit into the nobility and even threatens peace in the state. Therefore, the authorities of the Russian Empire were forced to pursue a policy of “тaking apart” of the nobility for decades. The reasons and motives, features, evolution of attitudes to the untitled nobility on the territory of Belarus and Ukraine are considered. The statistics and results of the policy of reducing the nobility are summarized.
