THE RECEPTION OF THE GLOSSES FROM FRANCYSK SKARYNA’S EDITIONS IN THE SCIENTIFIC DISCOURSE

Abstract

The article considers the reception of glosses from the publications of Franсysk Skaryna. In the scientific discourse, this specific part of the publications of the Belarusian firstprinter is analyzed from the standpoint of various disciplines, such as linguistics, literary criticism, bibliography, design, textual criticism. For this reason, glosses can be viewed by researchers as a lexicographical work, as a prototype of linguistic works, as a translation work, as a book design, as a component of the scientific apparatus of the publication, as a biblical component, as a marginalia, as an element of foreword-afterword complex, and as an editorial work.

Also, the glosses perform the function of exegesis, which confirms the direct reference to the biblical text which they are associated with. The glosses actually not only reveal the semantics of other relevant words (as a linguistic fact), but also deepen the meaning of the Scripture for the reader. In this case, we can see the implementation of at least two methods of exegesis: the literal explanation and the historical-literary-critical method. A comparison of quotations from some modern translations of the Bible with the version proposed by Francysk Skaryna shows the problems of translation and hermeneutics that the 16th-century educator encountered and tried to decode.

The existence of diverse approaches to the reception of glosses in scientific discourse can be explained by the syncretic nature of the respective publications, which was pointed out by researchers during the analysis and interpretation of Francysk Skaryna's forewords and afterwords.
