Abstract

The article is devoted to one of the most fascinating and dynamic periods in Belarusian book history. During the research, the design of about 50 covers of Belarusian and Polish books was analyzed, and new features for publications of that era were established. The publishers have begun to pay special attention to the advertising function of books considering such factors as the intensive growth of the readership, the enormous development of printing technologies, and the acceleration of the pace of life. In this regard, the design of the publication changes: the elements of persuasion as a signet, quotes, and mottos, information about the author, advertising texts appear on a book cover. Despite censorship and economic restrictions, publications of relevant topics still have been printing. The creative search for national identity has found its embodiment in the artistic design of books. Thus, in less than a century, a book tradition, which largely determined the appearance of today's Belarusian books, has formed and settled such tasks for the sphere, the optimal solutions of which we still need to find. For example, how to combine the informative and advertising function of a book so that, despite the diversity of approaches and opinions, the publication finds the only correct in a particular context artistic statement and ultimately serves one goal: the beauty of life.
