Abstract

The article presents a review of existing approaches to the concept of “national energy security”. These approaches have been systematized and comparatively characterized. The authors substantiate the necessity of diversification of energy consumption structure to ensure national energy security. Two approaches to diversification of energy consumption are analyzed: through diversification of suppliers of traditional energy resources and through increasing domestic production and use of renewable energy sources. The EU case study shows the successful diversification of the energy mix to enhance the political and economic sustainability of the region. The EU is systematically shifting towards renewable energy sources, diversifying natural gas suppliers in order to reduce dependence in case of disruption or political conflict on one importer and increase the region's energy security.
