Abstract
The article is devoted to the meta-linguistic characterization of the system of phonetic criteria for identifying English composites. The authors have considered the specifics of the definition of English composites as a linguistic phenomenon and characterized the mechanisms of emergence and functioning of composites as a class of linguistic units. Methodologically, this study is based on the structural modelling of linguistic relations and their phonological meta-description; additionally, the methodological resource of lexico-semantic, componential analysis and discourse analysis was involved. The phonetic identity of English-language composites was systematically verified within the framework of the presented model. The phonetic criteria of belonging of a particular linguistic unit to composites were characterized as a system. The following criteria made up the structure of the formed system: commonality of accent, rhythmic organization of speech, pragmatic orientation of utterance, variant specificity of language, contextual conditionality. This list is representative, which was argued and substantiated in the study. The structuring and detailing of the system of the above criteria testify to their significant linguistic potential. The results obtained can be taken into account and used in the study of composites of other languages, primarily languages of analytic structure. This study suggests the scaling of the developed research methodology in the context of all levels of the language system and has significance for the study of a wide range of linguistics problems and interdisciplinary fields of science.
