Abstract

The article examines the scientific activity of the historian, the first president of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus V.M. Ignatovsky, who headed the People's Commissariat of Education of the BSSR in the 20s of the last century. As People's Commissar of Education, as a researcher, teacher, author of books and textbooks, and as director of the Institute of Belarusian Culture, and then the first president of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Vsevolod Makarovich did a lot for the cultural and national revival of Belarus in the 20s of the twentieth century. The article analyzes some of Ignatovsky's works, in particular: his first research work “Short historical sketch of Horadenshchyna”, published in 1920, the most famous book by V. M. Ignatovsky's “Brief outline of the history of Belarus”, which covers the entire history of Belarus until 1924, and which for many years was a textbook on the history of Belarus, the book “Brief outline of the national and cultural revival of Belarus” (1921) and “Motives of the lyrics of the Belarusian singer Mikhas Reed” (1922), in which the historian addressed the topics of cultural development in Belarus. The research is based on documents of that time, the works of V. M. Ignatovsky himself, which allows us to show and evaluate V. M. Ignatovsky's contribution to the development of historical science in Belarus.
