Abstract

The article substantiates the role of mass media in maintaining environmental security, solving natural resource management problems and cultivating environmental friendliness in people. The history of creation and activity of the national social and political environmental journal of Belarus “Zviazda” na meliyaratsyi Palessia, which was published on the basis of “Zviazda”, the oldest national daily newspaper, in 1972– 1990, has become a subject of scientific analysis for the first time. The newspaper timely reported on events related to this sphere, introduced the public to innovations, formed a positive image of land reclamation as a vital process in modern society. The features of editorial work are determined, range of issues and themes, particular characteristics of editorial classification, the spectrum of publications genres are defined. The conducted analysis gives a reason to call the newspaper “Zviazda” na meliyaratsyi Palessia the first republican socio-political environmental publication of Belarus. Addressing the issue of environmental friendliness by the media community on a regular basis raises the level of environmental literacy among people. These issues are becoming more and more relevant owing to the increase of crisis phenomena in the environmental sphere, deepening of dramatic anthropogenic impact on nature, increasing risk of natural and manmade disasters. The traditions of “Zviazda” na meliyaratsyi Palessia in their editorial activity are continued by many ecologically oriented mass media published in the Republic of Belarus.
