Abstract

The analysis of the volumes and methods of reproduction and cultivation of forests in Belarus, subjected to large-scale depletion during the war years, is carried out. Two periods different in terms of the efficiency of forestry production have been established: 1944–1983 and 1983–2022. The key role of the pine formation in the development of sustainable forestry in Belarus is revealed. The necessity of optimizing the species and age structure of forests is substantiated in order to achieve the guiding principles of inexhaustible forest resources, relatively uniform forest management and cost-effective forestry. The expediency of including shrubs in forested lands, increasing the forest cover, has been called into question. A large-scale replacement of pine by birch and other soft-leaved species and its impact on the quality of forests were noted. The dynamics of the cost of wood resources in Belarus is analyzed. In the context of soil-typological groups, rational methods of reforestation, preparation of afforestation areas, types of planting material are recommended, attention is drawn to various opinions on the use of seedlings with a closed root system, etc. A conditionally optimal structure of the site of modal plantations of the forest fund of Belarus is proposed. A forecast for timber harvesting has been made, and extremely uneven forest management is noted in the future.
