Abstract

The article discusses the main trends in the development of Belarusian cultural thought of the late 19th – early 20th century. This is the time of active development of the science of Belarusian culture, or cultural studies proper. The spiritual and cultural movement takes shape as Belarusian studies and fixes the theme of Belarusian culture in the status of a subject of scientific analysis. The history of Belarusian culture becomes an independent area of research interests.

The Belarusian intelligentsia is critically processing the spiritual folk heritage, moving from the ideas of national self-consciousness as an ethnic factor to national ideas as an ideological and political factor. During this period, Belarusian folk writers acted as a kind of ideologists who had specific class roots and historical tasks.

At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, Belarusian cultural studies were associated with the general process of national revival, being both its cause and effect. In terms of theoretical reflections on culture, the archetypal layers of traditional culture were revealed and rethought, and the historical patterns of the development of the national spirit were formulated.
