Abstract

The article examines the socio-political activities of the historian, the first president of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Belarus V. M. Ignatovsky, in the 20s of the last century, who headed the People's Commissariat of Education of the BSSR. As People's Commissar of Education, as a research scientist, teacher, author of books and textbooks, and as director of the Institute of Belarusian Culture, and then the first president of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Vsevolod Makarovich did a lot for the cultural and national revival of Belarus in the 20s of the 20 century. His name is closely connected with the belarusization policy in our country at the beginning of the last century, when the People's Commissariat of Education made decisions on the use of the Belarusian language in the country's cultural and educational institutions, the publication of textbooks in the Belarusian language, the organization of education in the native language in Belarusian and other national schools, training teachers to work in national schools. The study is based on archival materials, documents of that time, scientific articles that allow us to give specific examples of Ignatovsky's activities during this period, to evaluate his contribution to the development of education, science and culture in Belarus.
