Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of problematic issues of the development of the mass media system in the Republic of Belarus. Using the information from the catalog of the National Library of the Republic of Belarus, as well as the catalog of print media for the first half of 2023, the author determined the number of magazines related to popular science, their thematic range, the dynamics of publication from 1991 to 2023, and their life cycle. It is noted that the formation of the system of popular science magazines occurred unevenly in different periods after the collapse of the Soviet Union. It is indicated that all the magazines that exist today are published in Minsk and do not position themselves as purely popular science publications; that in publications of various subjects (culture, society, medicine, nature, economics, jurisprudence) the process of their differentiation according to the interests of the audience is noticeable.

It is concluded that popular science magazines are an independent component of the general system of mass media, requiring further study and systematization.
