Abstract

The article analyzes the materials of the official reference and address yearbooks published by the Vitebsk Provincial Statistical Committee in 1861–1914. The topics and content of cultural and historical reviews, physical and geographical descriptions of the provincial space, background information on road and postal communications, and proposals for household and leisure services, set out in the appendices, are considered.

The studied materials are correlated with the processes of formation in the Russian Empire of the organizational structure of excursion, religious, health-improving, cultural and educational tourism. In this regard, the thematic saturation and illustrative design of historical and ethnographic materials, descriptions of the main sights in Vitebsk and county towns, as well as monuments of religious culture and art are reflected. The moments of filling of the commemorative books of the province with reference data and information that is necessary for organizing a tourist trip are highlighted. Qualitative changes in the nature and form of the information provided are emphasized, caused by the strengthening of the scientific, educational and cultural-cognitive motivation for travel, the growth of the general mobility of the population.
