Abstract

The article examines the development of geopolitical views in Ancient Rome. The works of the most prominent and well-known ancient Roman philosophers, geographers and historians in this field are analyzed and characterized as Marcus Tullius Cicero, Strabo, Lucius Anelius Seneca, Lucius Mestrius Plutarch, Publius Cornelius Tacitus and Ammianus Marcelin. The connection of the geopolitical views and concepts of Roman thinkers with the geopolitical theories of Ancient Greece is revealed. The expansionist nature of geopolitical views in the times of Ancient Rome is indicated. The unexplored nature of the problem of the development of Roman geopolitical thought in Russian historiography is noted. It is concluded that the geopolitical views of ancient Roman thinkers, conceptually developing the geopolitical views of ancient Greek philosophers and based on geographical determinism, formed the basis of the theories of the classics of geopolitical thought of the XIX–XX centuries and modernity.
