Abstract

The article analyzes the main aspects of the spiritual and intellectual culture of the Enlightenment. The complexity and diversity of religion’s influence in the history of the 18th century is emphasized. The intellectual tendencies associated with the development of tolerance are considered. А wide range of perception and understanding of religious phenomena by the enlighteners of the main countries of West is shown. The gradual transformation of Christianity in the Age of Reason, associated by the rationalization of theology and the general desire to humanize social relations, is stated. The conclusion underlines that the religious sphere not only adapted to the changes of the 18th century, but in many respects was their source. At the same time, the very forms of influence of the religious factor in the Age of Reason were significantly different from those that took place in the history of the Western countries of the 16th–17th centuries.
