Abstract

The Republic of Belarus, being a Party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), has undertaken obligations to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and, as a consequence, conduct a qualitative and quantative accounting of these emissions.

Purpose: to determine the possible amount of GHG emission reductions in the Energy and Waste sectors as a result of the use of municipal solid waste as alternative fuels (refuse derived fuel – RDF).

Results: the possible amount of GHG emission reductions from the use of RDF was estimated, including the first-time made assessment of GHG emission reductions from fossil fuel substitution.

Conclusion: the total national GHG emissions include only CO2 emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels waste, and therefore the use of RDF is a way to possible reduce GHG emissions in the Energy sector which is up to 0,28% of the total national GHG emissions excluding removals in the sector “Land use, land use change and forestry” in 2019.
