Abstract

The process of wastewater treatment with the use of granulated activated sludge was examined from the example of brewery and dairy wastewater. The experimental scheme simulates the flow process, includes nitrification and denitrification processes. It is shown, that activated sludge granules obtained by incubation in dairy wastewater with aeration of flocculated activated sludge from dairy treatment facilities are acceptable for treatment of wastewater of different composition; significant differences in neither rate nor in degree of treatment are noted (the degree was 71,2 and 69,9% for brewery and dairy wastewater respectively). The granules contain sufficient quantity of microorganisms performing nitrification and denitrification processes (the degree of nitrification attained is 95,6 and 96,8% for brewery and dairy wastewater respectively, 46,4% of nitrate nitrogen was denitrificated). It is noted slight loosening of granules structure and their size reduction caused by substrate scarcity. It is acknowledged the opportunity of continuous granules storage (for 2 years) in physiological solution at 4–6°С.
