Abstract

Belarusians and Russians share common historical roots. Both peoples belong to the East Slavic civilization. Nevertheless, due to certain historical conditions, their destinies diverged in specific periods, they developed separately, preserving their East Slavic identity, but developing distinctive features.

In these circumstances, it is important to understand the common past and the distinctive features of our peoples at different stages of history.

The proposed article analyzes the assessments of various aspects of our common history in modern Belarusian historiography. The study of academic materials has shown that the current state of historiography on the issues of the shared past is characterized by a variety of opinions and approaches, while maintaining the biased description of this particular problem. The tendencies of interpretation of the common past in various historiographical traditions, which “merge” with journalism, politics of memory, etc., are clearly traced. At the same time, the tendency to ideological coloring of a number of subjects remains and increases.
