Abstract

The purpose of the article is to develop a periodization of outdated nominations by the time of archaization in modern Russian and to give a lexical and semantic characteristic of names that were archaized (or are out of active use) in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. For the first time in Belarusian linguistics, lexical-semantic characterictics of the obsolete vocabulary of the modern Belarusian literary language is given taking into consideration the time of archaization. In accordance with this, three main temporal-stylistic groups of words (and their derivatives), terminological combinations and some word meanings are distinguished: “pre-Soviet” obsolete vocabulary (names that became obsolete before the Soviet period of the history of the modern Belarusian language), “Soviet” obsolete vocabulary (names that became archaic in the Soviet period of the history of the modern Belarusian language) and “post-Soviet” obsolete vocabulary (names that became obsolete in the latest period of development of the modern Belarusian language or are at the stage of archaization). The words that fell out of active use in the 1990s and at the beginning of the 21st century are analyzed in more detail. It is concluded that the outdated vocabulary in the modern Russian literary language is not the same in terms of correlation with the designated realities (historicisms and archaisms), origin, stylistic characteristics, thematic affiliation, and the time of archaization. “Pre-Soviet” obsolete words in modern Russian make up the largest group (57.1% of units). There are fewer “Soviet” (34.6% of units) and “postSoviet” outdated vocabulary (8.3% of units).
