Abstract

The article provides an analysis of the names of the elements of letters of various fonts and alphabets. Particular attention is paid to the emergence of new elements associated with the transition from material font media to digital media, which, in turn, caused an increase in the number and variety of new computer fonts. The classical school of typography identifies basic and connecting strokes, serifs, semi-ovals and other elements in the letter, however, the use of computer technology for the design and development of fonts has made it possible to calculate and create new typefaces that have a unique anatomy and are of scientific interest from the point of view of the development of type business and writing. Particular attention is paid to the comparison of the terminological apparatus of the Russian and English languages on the topic under study, comparison and search for analogies to identify the necessary element and develop special onomastics. The article also indicates various approaches to the classification of fonts, their grouping according to certain criteria. The analysis used data from literary sources, which constitute the current basis for the training of specialists in typography and type design. The results obtained can be used in the future in the educational process and research activities.
